Educational Standards - Now Open for Comment

Deadline for comments May 10

The SCALE Educational Standards focus on what students need to know to successfully enter the defense microelectronics workforce. Each Technical Vertical has a unique set of standards.

These standards were identified through input from government, industry, and faculty. They have been reviewed by stakeholders through panel discussions and are in their final draft form. This public review will enable SCALE to verify the content and establish the minimum training requirements for SCALE students.

Key functions of SCALE Educational Standards:

  1. Define a high-level list of topics. The Educational Standards identify the major concepts and skills students must have exposure to in order to be defense-ready in their area of microelectronics. The list creates a common foundation across SCALE institutions, ensuring that all students receive the same essential content. The standards capture the breadth of the technical area, not depth in any single topic.

  2. Establish the baseline. The Educational Standards are the minimum requirements. They are not intended to encompass everything taught in a school’s plan of study, and are designed to allow for different areas of focus at different institutions. The standards capture training required for defense microelectronics but not covered elsewhere (e.g., through ABET accreditation or typical degree programs).

  3. Articulate the end goals of instruction. The Educational Standards are the outcome of a complete plan of study. They are aligned specifically with Defense and Defense-Industrial-Base employer needs.

  4. Provide a roadmap for student learning. The Educational Standards provide clear expectations that allow schools to map their curriculum to the standards and identify and fill gaps in student learning.

  5. Hold SCALE schools accountable. The Educational Standards prescribe what SCALE schools must provide students through coursework, research, asynchronous instruction, and other learning opportunities.

  6. Ensure adaptability. The Educational Standards will change with workforce needs, technology development, and educational research.
